Twice has the country of Estonia declared independence: February 24, 1918 (from the Russian Empire) and August 20, 1991 (after the end of the Soviet Union occupation). Estonians’ peaceful demonstrations and cultural events, known as the ‘Singing Revolution,’ were applauded for their nonviolent efforts against foreign rule.
